Ford today upgraded its Sync in-car system with its first ever Internet access. Just referred to as Sync Wi-Fi, the feature lets a car using an updated version of the entertainment system share a 3G connection with passengers over a Wi-Fi bridge. Unlike the Autonet systems used by Chevrolet and Chrysler, however, the Ford approach has users supply their own modem and relies on the USB port to plug in a 3G stick from multiple carriers....

Network conflicts may be the culprit for recent reports of iPhone reception problems in Canada, as other carriers begin to install “dummy” HSPA towers, reports The iPhone Blog. A rep from Canadian iPhone carrier, Rogers Canada, told a customer that reception problems may be attributable to Bell and Telus who have recently begun upgrading their network. “It is probably due to the new HSPA towers being put up by other carriers that is interfering with your signal,” the rep is alleged to have said. The rep suggested affected users manually select the Rogers network rather than allowing their iPhone to make an automatic selection. That operation takes place in ‘Settings’, where users should go to ‘Carriers’, uncheck the automatic tick-box and then only select Rogers from the list of carriers they see.

Thanks to sylvain for sending us the following capture obtained from the benchmarking of his iMac Core i7 just after unpacking: Without going into details, it seems that the Core i7 is about 25% faster than the Core i5 which was already ahead of the Core 2 Duo-based iMac models. In summary, the iMac Core i7 can compete with the Mac Pro 2008!. This is a true evolution in the iMac architecture, and for sure it might be the answer to the Mac users willing to get a more powerful desktop computer without investing in a Mac Pro

eliminate_proI’m not sure how many of you are playing Eliminate Pro on your iPhones, but I’m guessing it has to be a fairly high number, considering the app’s success since its recent launch. ngmoco’s ambitious first-person shooter for Apple’s mobile platform is third overall in the App Store’s Top Free list, but what’s more impressive is the number 22 spot it currently occupies in the Top Grossing list of apps. That’s a huge step for the micropayments business model made possible by the introduction of in-app purchasing in iPhone OS 3.0. It marks the first real evidence that developers can make good money offering a “freemium” model on the iPhone platform, with users getting the initial product for free, but paying for in-game rewards and additional content. ngmoco appears to have found the sweet spot in add-on content where users don’t feel like they’re being extorted by a game’s in-app purchasing
system. Eliminate Pro uses a system in which players earn rewards for in-game achievements that can be used to purchase armor and weapon upgrades. The catch is that you only get a certain amount of time during which game play earns you points. You can keep playing for free, but in order to get more rewards, you have to pay for more usable time. Users can buy blocks of active time using the in-app purchasing system, in $1, $10 and $30 dollar increments. Players seem to have taken a shine to the system, since in-app purchases alone account for all of Eliminate Pro’s gross revenue. ngmoco also has a strong community and social media promotions effort in place behind the new title. The company’s other title that depends heavily on in-app commerce, Touch Pets Dogs, hasn’t yet mirrored the success of Eliminate Pro. It hasn’t been available in the U.S. store for...

If you didn't heed previous warnings to secure your jailbroken iPhone, you may be in for some serious trouble. Computer security firm Intego has identified the first known truly malicious code which targets jailbroken iPhones with default root passwords. The latest in a string of recent attacks, iPhone/Privacy.A uses a technique similar to previous hacks. The malware scans for phones on a given network with an open SSH port, then attempts to log in using the default root password that is the same on all iPhones. Unlike the previous versions, which merely replaced the wallpaper image to alert users that they have been cracked, the
new version silently copies personal data—"e-mail, contacts, SMSs, calendars, photos, music files, videos, as well as any data recorded by any iPhone app." It then sends the data back to the machine running the software. ...

Over the past few days, Electronista has had the opportunity to test Rogers' new HSPA+ 3G service to see whether or not it lives up to the cellular provider's claims and see what T-Mobile USA users can expect in the near future. With peak speeds of about 21Mbps, it's theoretically three times faster than the best anyone has to offer on a national level. We'll find out whether that's the case with Rogers' only USB modem for the service and provide an important tip for Mac OS X Snow Leopard users looking to sign on....
