Two new iterations of iPhone firmware are already in field testing, a website's access logs indicate. Records publicized by Boy Genius Report show devices with v3.1.3 and v4.0 firmware connecting, alongside hardware at or before the present v3.1.2 revision. A v3.1.3 release could be imminent, as it would be a relatively minor update and just in time to support a flood of new iPhone and iPod touch owners....


 

Intel to preview mobile Core i5, more on Thursday

Intel has signaled its plans to detail the first processors based on its 32 nanometer Westmere technology on Thursday. The semiconductor firm is expected to center its attention on the first dual-core notebook chips based on both the 32nm process and Nehalem and should introduce the mobile Core i5 and i3 as part of the introduction. These will be the first to carry graphics on the processor die and, on i5 models, will support Turbo Boost to automatically overclock one core when the other is shut down....

Intel's dual-core mobile Core i5, i7 priced in leak

A leak today reveals that at least three of Intel's mobile Core i5 and i7 parts should be available come the start of next year at moderate prices. The company plans to head up the line with the 2.66GHz Core i7-620M, which will support Hyperthreading to perform the work of four cores. It should carry 4MB of Level 2 cache, support Turbo Boost up to 3.33GHz on one core, and cost $332 in batches of $1,000....

Fresh from the “uh-oh, watch out for” department, Engadget warns that some - by no means all - Core i7-based iMacs may suffer a couple of technical faults, one of which sees the all-new superpowered Mac turn up D.O.A.

“A quick glance across Apple's support forums and on other Mac boards around the web reveals that some machines are showing up D.O.A. and / or with cracked screens,” the report explains.

“We're a little more familiar with the D.O.A. issue, since the new i7 we just bought doesn't boot at all,” Engadget adds, but observes that this fault only seems to affect a minority of machines. Assuming your model’s unaffected, the performance gains offered by these new Macs seem pretty impressive (see chart). The 27-inch 2.66 GHz Core i5 750 iMac has a suggested retail price of $1,999, with the 2.8 GHz Intel Core i7 860 processor available as a $200 upgrade. Both

We usually love our Apple products. They work well, are easy to understand and when we have a problem, Apple works quickly to resolve it. Most of the time. What happens when Apple simply won’t play ball? Read on and find out how to work Apple’s system. Step 1: AASP and Geniuses For many people, their first interaction is with the Apple store, however some will go to an Apple Authorized Service provider (AASP). AASP determinations can be overridden by an Apple store, so going to the Apple store would be your first escalation if you are not satisfied by the AASP. Typically a Genius determines you have a problem, but alas, you may be out of warranty. Maybe they are claiming the item was abused or tampered with and you disagree. Often you are just barely out of warranty or fall right outside a Repair Extension.
Be sure to keep careful notes of the dates and times of your conversations and with whom you’ve spoken. All is not lost. Step 2: The CS Code Your next step can be to call the general number for Apple technical support (800-275-2273).  Explain your situation and ask for an accommodation; usually you want a repair at no charge to you. Your ultimate goal is to get a “CS code.” A CS code acts like a coupon. Give the CS code to the AASP and the cost of the repair will be discounted by the amount the CS Code authorizes. Parallels Desktop 5.0 for Mac shipped today, its developer citing that the latest version of the virtualization software runs 64-bit Windows 7 22% faster than its nearest competitor on a MacBook Pro. Per AppleInsider, the developer said that the tests, conducted by Crimson Consulting Group, also found that the new Parallels Desktop 5 for Mac is up to 300% faster for virtual machine operations than its predecessor. In addition, 3Dmark 2006 Professional test scores perform up to 7 times better for 3D and graphics performance. The latest version of Parallels Desktop boasts more than 70 new features, including a new “Crystal view” mode, which can make Windows completely disappear. The new software also allows users to enable Apple multitouch trackpad gestures such as pinch, swipe, and rotate within Windows. Parallels Desktop 5 for Mac retails for US$79.99, requires Mac OS X 10.4 later to install and run and includes US$175 worth of additional software: Parallels Internet Security 2009 by Kaspersky with a one-year subscription, Acronis Disk Director Suite 10.0, and Acronis True Image Home 2010.
